Web hosting, in short
What a managed web hosting account will give you: websites, PHP, free certificates, mail, databases, DNS, backups and traffic statistics.

A web hosting account is the opposite of a virtual server. You do not get a machine, a root password or an operating system to look after. You get an account, and we keep the software layer working underneath it.
What it will give you
| Thing | What you will do with it |
|---|---|
| Websites | Point a domain at a folder, choose a PHP version, get a free certificate |
| Files | Browse, edit and upload from the client area, or connect with FTP |
| Databases | MySQL databases with their own users and passwords |
| Mailboxes on your own domains, with forwarding | |
| DNS | Host your zone with us and edit the records |
| Scheduled tasks | Run a command on a clock |
| Backups | A copy of your files, databases and mail, which you can restore or download |
| Statistics | Traffic per day per site, and visitor figures |
Your plan sets how much of each you get: how much disk, how much monthly traffic, how many sites, how many databases, how many mailboxes and how many subdomains. Those numbers are on the plan you choose.
What you will not have to do
- No operating system to patch.
- No web server to configure.
- No certificate renewals to remember.
- No mail server to keep off a blocklist.
- No firewall to get right.
That is the trade. You give up the root password, and in exchange none of the above is your problem.
What you will not be able to do
- Install arbitrary software. If your application needs something beyond PHP, a database and the usual tooling, you want a virtual server.
- Run a long lived background process of your own. Scheduled tasks run and finish.
- Reach the shell. There is no SSH login to the account, only file access.
Separation from other accounts
Your account gets its own system user and its own home directory, and PHP runs as that user with its files pinned inside your home. Database and mail names are prefixed with your account's own name, so two customers can never collide.
Nothing you do can read another customer's files, and nothing they do can read yours.
Where to go next
- Websites, PHP and certificates
- Files and FTP
- Databases
- DNS records
- Backups, scheduled tasks and statistics
